BALTIMORE, MD — June 15, 2022 — The Global Entrepreneurship Network (GEN) joined BGE and Hello Alice in announcing the latest recipients of the BGE Energizing Small Business Grant, one of several programs undertaken by GEN's Small Business Grants Program to provide direct support to entrepreneurs impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and other significant challenges.

In the latest round, one hundred small businesses received grants totaling $2,000,000. Since 2021, 276 businesses have received grants through the BGE, Hello Alice and GEN partnership, totaling more than $5.5 million. The program prioritizes businesses operated by historically underrepresented minority groups often challenged with access to capital – with 73% of grants provided to businesses owned by people of color and 71% owned by women.

"Small businesses are the backbone of Maryland's economy, and their success is our collective success. Unfortunately, the region and country still feel residual impacts of COVID-19 and are now also facing difficult economic headwinds. The Energizing Small Business Grants program aims to help strengthen these businesses so they can continue serving the community," said Carim Khouzami, BGE President and CEO. "We're proud to support small businesses of all types so that they can recover and ultimately thrive."

To qualify for the first round of 2022 funding, Maryland-based, for-profit businesses had to be founded in or prior to 2020, be in good standing with the State of Maryland, have fewer than 25 employees, have a gross annual revenue of less than $7 million for 2021, and be able to demonstrate a need for funding that supports their business and serves their customers.

All grant applicants gain access to Hello Alice's free COVID-19 Business Resource Center and opportunities through GEN to ensure consistent support and mentorship to all business owners.
